SUMMARY:Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County Presents 3rd Saturday Summer Programs on Saturday\, August 17\, 2024 at 11:00 AM
DESCRIPTION:The Historic Preservation Trust of Berks County \nHistoric Preservation Trust of Berks County Presents \n3rd Saturday Summer Programs\nSaturday\, August 17\, 2024 \nOur 3rd Saturday Programs are back this year! We will be offering these site-wide programs May through September. Program begins at the White Horse Inn unless otherwise noted. Suggested donation $2/person. All proceeds benefit the Trust. \nThe Pennsylvania Long Rifle\nAugust 17\, 2024 • 11am \nOn August 17th \, Kevin O’Donnell will present an exciting program on the history and artwork of the Pennsylvania Long Rifle. While the iconic rifle used in the settlement of the United States is often called the Kentucky rifle\, its origin is mainly here in Pennsylvania. The various places where the rifles were made developed their own specific styles. These styles are distinctive to the areas where the rifles were made. These rifles were beautiful as well as functional. They have artistic designs and figures that are carved\ninto the wood or engraved into the metal decorations. Kevin is a reenactor with the First Pennsylvania regiment which portrays riflemen from the early part of the Revolutionary War and has been shooting flintlock rifles for 40 years. Kevin was trained as a gunsmith at the Jacobsburg Historical Society where he took apprentice classes.\nThe HPTBC is a non-profit organization that acquires\, preserves\, and maintains historically and architecturally significant properties in Berks County\, Pennsylvania and educates Berks County and its’ visitors about the role these sites played in Pennsylvania and American history. The Trust seeks to foster community involvement and\nsupport in promoting awareness and appreciation of historic structures and encouraging their adaptive reuse. The Trust currently owns and maintains eight historically significant buildings in the greater Reading/Berks County area. Our office is located in the White Horse Inn on Old Philadelphia Pike in Douglassville. If you are interested\nin donating to the Trust please call 610-385-4762 or visit www.historicpreservationtrust.org.

SUMMARY:Visitors and families are invited to Free Summer Sundays at the Moravian Historical Society during the month of August! Join us on August 4\, 11\, 18\, and 25\, from 1 pm to 4 pm.
DESCRIPTION:Visitors and families are invited to Free Summer Sundays at the Moravian Historical Society during the month of August! \nJoin us on August 4\, 11\, 18\, and 25\, from 1 pm to 4 pm.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNazareth\, PA—The Moravian Historical Society announces the return of Free Summer Sundays in August! Guests will enjoy free admission to the Museum\, including free guided Museum Tours\, and children can learn colonial skills and crafts through unique hands-on activities each week. While all are welcome to join us\, some activities may require parental assistance. This year’s activities explore Colonial life and history with knowledgeable workshop leaders: \n\nAugust 4: Colonial Chores—All hands to work! In colonial times\, every member of the family needed to work to contribute to the household. Children too! Try your hand at carrying water\, carding wool\, beating rugs\, or washing clothes. Discover what chores were like in early America.\nAugust 11: Paper Marbling—Did you know that Ben Franklin used paper marbling when he was developing continental currency during the American Revolution? It helped deter counterfeit versions. Paper marbling in the colonies was also decorative\, too! Try your hand at this traditional centuries-old craft and create your own paper for a journal or cards!\nAugust 18: Tea Time—Bring your doll or teddy bear for a special afternoon tea on the lawn. Enjoy tea and Moravian sugar cake while you learn about colonial-era tea time and manners. It’s always a wonderful day for a tea party!\nAugust 25: Butter Making—During colonial times\, many Moravians were experts at making butter from the milk of local cows. Children made butter too! Learn fun colonial food facts\, like how the colonists kept butter from melting during hot summer days\, while you try to make butter yourself.\n\nYou can find additional details about the Free Summer Sunday series by visiting the Moravian Historical Society’s Website: www.moravianhistory.org/free-summer-sundays \nThis series is funded in part by the Northampton County Department of Community and Economic Development through its Hotel Tax Grant. \nThe Moravian Historical Society’s Museum is open daily from 1 to 4 pm and is located at 214 East Center Street\, Nazareth\, Pennsylvania. \nFounded in 1857\, the Moravian Historical Society (MHS) preserves\, interprets\, and celebrates the rich culture of the Moravians. MHS maintains the 1740–1743 Whitefield House and the 1740 Gray Cottage\, the oldest surviving Moravian structure in North America. Recognized widely for its significant collection\, the museum offers permanent and changing exhibitions and a store that features gifts\, books\, and handmade artisan items.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload the Press Release\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLearn More\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPrograms at the Moravian Historical Society are supported in part by the Northampton County Hotel Tax Grant.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Moravian Historical Society is a proud member of: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit Our Website\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.moravianhistory.org\ninfo@moravianhistory.org 610.759.5070
