An elaborate miniature display that tells the Christmas story\, the putz is a Moravian tradition that reaches back into the eighteenth century. \n  \nThe Morris family putz began in the 1850s\, and continued in the family home in Bethlehem\, Pennsylvania until 1994\, when it was donated to the Moravian Historical Society. Originally\, the putz occupied most of the Morris dining room and was lit with beeswax candles. The collection includes hand-carved figurines from Germany that date to the mid-1800s. The unique feature of the Morris family putz is the inclusion of wild animals\, including giraffes\, bears\, wolves\, and lions into the Christmas story. The display will take place in the 1740 Gray Cottage from November 30 through January 5. \nFree tours offered daily at 1:45\, 2:45\, and 3:45 pm \n  \nNovember 30\, 10:00 am–4:00 pm \nDecember 1\, 1:00 – 4:00 pm \nSmall Business Saturday & Museum Store Sunday \nShop locally this holiday season! The Moravian Historical Society’s Museum Store carries a large selection of local artisan-made gifts\, ornaments\, books\, and jewelry. Shop Moravian stars\, advent calendars\, Nazareth souvenirs\, and more! Enjoy special discounts and extended hours on Small Business Saturday (November 30). The event is open to all ages and abilities\, and participants can choose to ruck (wear a weighted backpack) or run/walk a 5K or 1-mile course. \nThe Ruck ‘n Run/Walk is an opportunity to honor and support veterans in the Lehigh Valley and beyond. The event will also raise funds for Battle Borne\, a non-profit organization that focuses on supporting veterans and their families through building social connection\, strengthening community\, and facilitating mental health services. \n  \nThe Ruck ‘n Run/Walk will begin at 9:00 AM with a check-in at 8:00 AM offering an in-person race with 5K Ruck and Run/Walk options in addition to a 1-mile Fun Run/Walk option. The course is an off-road grass course through the scenic Bicentennial Park. \nAwards will be presented to the top three male and female finishers in each age group for the 5K Ruck and 5K Run/Walk options. The college or university team with the most participants (Ruck\, Run/Walk\, and Fun Run/Walk combined) will earn a plaque to be displayed on their campus\, and the business/company team with the most participants will earn a plaque to be displayed at their workplace. \nRegistration for the Ruck ‘n Run/Walk is now open. DESCRIPTION:Heritage Day Fall Festival\nSunday\, October 20\, 2024 • 12:00-4:00pm \nThe Daniel Boone Homestead Associates are excited to celebrate the arrival of fall with the Homestead’s annual Heritage Day event. This living history event features a variety of eighteenth-century demonstrations\, trades\, and hands-on activities. These include gunsmithing\, blacksmithing\, open-hearth cooking\, spinning and wool dyeing\, candle dipping\, leatherworking\, and more. The ever-popular colonial musician Bob Mouland will be returning this year\, and visitors can watch a demonstration of the historic Bertolet Sawmill. The event will also feature craft and specialty food vendors as well as fall activities for children like pumpkin painting.\nIn the Boone House\, volunteers will be cooking a hearty meal over the hearth\, while Bob Mouland treats guests to colonial music in the English parlor. Visitors can also tour the Boone House and spring cellar and learn about the three families who lived there during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Throughout the historic area\, visitors can learn about the detailed work of a leatherworker\, the hot trade of a blacksmith\, and the skillful work of a gunsmith. Volunteers will also be demonstrating textile processing\,\nwool dyeing\, spinning\, and quilting\, and visitors will have the unique opportunity to tour the three-room Bertolet Log House.\nDuring the afternoon\, visitors will also have a chance to see the Bertolet Sawmill in action. The Sawmill is one of only three operating\, water-powered\, vertical blade sawmills in the United States. It was moved to the Homestead in 1972 from its original location in the Oley Valley. In addition to demonstrations and trades\, there will be a variety of eighteenth-century hands-on activities for children and adults to enjoy including candle dipping\, quill pen writing\, and colonial toys and games.\nAdmission: Adults $12.00\, Seniors (65+) $10.00\, Youth (6-17) $5.00.  Children 5 and under and DBHA members are free.
