SUMMARY:Fall Lecture Series at the Daniel Boone Homestead “Six Penny Creek and Landscapes of Freedom: How Small Rural Black Communities Used Landscapes to Free People” Sunday\, September 7\, 2025 • 2:00pm
DESCRIPTION:Fall Lecture Series at the Daniel Boone Homestead \n“Six Penny Creek and Landscapes of Freedom: How Small Rural Black CommunitiesUsed Landscapes to Free People” Sunday\, September 7\, 2025 • 2:00pm \nJoin the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates for their annual fall lecture series at the Daniel Boone Homestead. Historians and scholars will share their knowledge on various topics with the local community and its visitors. Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn more about life in the past.On September 7\, Muhlenberg anthropology professor Benjamin Carter will share his presentation “Six Penny Creek and Landscapes of Freedom: How Small Rural Black Communities Used Landscapes to Free People.” In this presentation\, Dr. Carter will demonstrate the ways that small\, rural Black communities in\nsoutheastern Pennsylvania used landscapes to aid in their own survival and to support those fleeing enslavement in the American South. Utilizing both cutting-edge\, high-tech methods\, such as remote sensing and machine learning\, and tried and true methods\, like field survey and the analysis of historic documents\, our research focuses on a single community called Six Penny Creek\, located about 5 miles due south of the Daniel Boone\nHomestead. This work shows that the community was able to leverage local forests\, which were used to fuel local iron furnaces\, to extract resources for their own communities and as clandestine routes with hidden temporary housing for freedom seekers.\nDr. Benjamin Carter is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at Muhlenberg College where he has taught for over 15 years. A Registered Professional Archaeologist\, Dr. Carter’s current concentration is historical archaeology focusing on the charcoal production in the nineteenth century and its relationship to the Underground Railroad. He earned his Ph.D. in Anthropology in 2008 from Washington University in St. Louis.\nAdmission for the lectures is a $2/person suggested donation. Please\, no pets and no smoking. The Fall Lecture Series will take place in the DeTurk Education Center. This program is presented and funded by The Daniel Boone Homestead Associates.\nThe Daniel Boone Homestead is the birthplace of the famed frontiersman\, born in 1734. The Boone House\, constructed in three stages throughout the eighteenth century\, is a 10-room stone structure fully furnished to the period and situated on 579 acres of rolling countryside. The Daniel Boone Homestead is located halfway between Reading and Pottstown\, one mile north of Rt. 422 near Baumstown. The Homestead is owned by the\nPennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission\, and daily historic operations are run by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates\, a local\, nonprofit organization. If you would like more information or would like to make a donation\, please contact the Daniel Boone Homestead at 610-582-4900.

SUMMARY:Celebrate Community and Fun at Emmaus’ Farewell to Summer Festival on Saturday\, September 20\, 2025\, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Community and Fun at Emmaus’ Farewell to Summer Festival \nEmmaus\, PA –  \nThe Emmaus Main Street Partners\, proud partners of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce\, are excited to welcome the community back to the beloved Farewell to Summer Festival on Saturday\, September 20\, 2025\, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This annual tradition fills Emmaus Triangle Park and the surrounding borough with laughter\, music\, food\, and the kind of small-town charm that makes Emmaus so special. \nIn the Triangle\, families can climb aboard fire trucks and police vehicles at the popular Touch a Truck\, shop from more than 50 local craft vendors\, and enjoy delicious local food and kid-friendly and adult beverages. Beyond the park\, the fun continues with a free tie-dye station hosted by Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate Valley Partners\, the always-beloved Heritage Festival at the Emmaus Historical Society\, and Yerg-Fest at Yergey Brewing. Thanks to both Jeff McElhaney of Edward Jones and Wehrung’s Lumber and home center\, the Emmaus Theatre will offer a free showing of the Lego Batman Movie at 2:00PM to celebrate National Batman Day! \nIn addition to exploring all the vendors and activities along main street\, we encourage festival goers to visit the local businesses that call Emmaus home by participating in the Scarecrow Trail! Explore over 20 local businesses who have decorated for fall\, all including a scarecrow amongst the decor.  At each stop guests will collect 1 of 11 puzzle pieces to build a scarecrow of their own! Those who complete their scarecrow will be entered into a raffle to win $50 in local gift cards. \nThe Farewell to Summer Festival is more than an event\, it’s a celebration of community. Year after year\, it brings neighbors together\, shines a spotlight on local businesses\, and creates lasting memories in the heart of downtown. Organizers note that the event continues to grow each year\, with even more surprises still to come. \n“We are so excited to welcome everyone back to the Triangle for this year’s Farewell to Summer Festival\,” said Hayden Rinde\, Manager of the Emmaus Main Street Partners. “This event is all about celebrating our community\, supporting local businesses\, and creating memories with family and friends. It’s a day that truly captures the spirit of Emmaus\, and if you keep your eyes open\, you might even notice the start of something new we’ve been working on behind the scenes.” \nLocal businesses share in the excitement as well. Chloe Krempasky\, Marketing & Communications Technology Assistant at Burkholder’s Heating & Air Conditioning\, shared\, “We’re thrilled to sponsor such a fantastic event. Being part of the Emmaus community for many years\, it’s always special to see neighbors and businesses come together. This group has now evolved into Celtic Cultural Alliance to better communicate the overall goals of the organization. \n\nThe CCA has expanded with year-round programming to support the mission of promoting and preserving Celtic Culture through arts\, music\, literature\, dance\, and history programs. In keeping with the spirit of “Next Generation”\, the CCA also offers scholarships to promising young students of the Celtic Arts. These yearly scholarships are offered to students of the arts\, including Irish Step Dance\, Highland Dance\, Fiddle\, and Bagpipes. \n\nThe Celtic Classic has blossomed into one of the largest Highland Games and Celtic Festivals in North America. Annually\, over 200\,000 visitors come to Historic Bethlehem to join in this celebration of all things Celtic. The organization has expanded into year-round programs. Our educational programming has expanded to include community outreach events in area school districts\, religious institutions\, local theaters and colleges throughout the Lehigh Valley. A series of scholarships are awarded each year in varied areas of Celtic culture. \n\n Celtic Classic Highland Games & Festival\, Parade of Shamrocks and Lehigh Valley HopsFest and CCA event logos are trademarks of Celtic Cultural Alliance in the U.S. and/or other countries. \n\n© 2024 Celtic Classic- Highland Games & Festival. \nAll Rights Reserved.
