DESCRIPTION:The Liberty Bell Was Hidden in Allentown\, and Now a New Festival Will Tell Its Story \nALLENTOWN\, PA – September 2026 – For nearly nine months during the American Revolution\, one of the nation’s most enduring symbols of liberty was hidden beneath the floor of a church in what is now the heart of downtown Allentown. As British troops approached Philadelphia in September 1777\, American authorities feared the city’s bells would be seized and melted down for ammunition. They secretly removed the bells and transported them north by wagon. Among them was the State House Bell\, which would become known as the Liberty Bell. \nThe bell arrived in Northampton Towne\, today’s Allentown\, and was concealed beneath the floorboards of Zion’s Reformed Church. It remained there until the British evacuated Philadelphia in June 1778\, when it was safely returned. Nearly 250 years later\, Allentown is bringing that remarkable story back into the streets. \nThe inaugural Liberty Bell Festival will take place Saturday\, September 19\, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Downtown Allentown\, offering a free day of history\, live music\, food\, local makers\, and community celebration. The festival will begin with a flag-raising ceremony at Allentown City Hall before a historic processional leads attendees through downtown to Zion’s Church\, where historian and storyteller Joshua Fink will share the story of the Liberty Bell and its journey to Allentown. \nThe connection can still be seen today. A replica Liberty Bell stands at 622 W. Hamilton Street\, at the site of the former Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ\, where the original bell was hidden during the Revolutionary War. 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of American independence\, with communities throughout the country commemorating the nation’s semiquincentennial. For Allentown\, the connection to that history continues into next year\, when September 2027 will mark 250 years since the Liberty Bell arrived in the city. \n“This is one of those stories that makes you look at your city differently\,” said Brittney Ciardi\, SVP of Allentown Initiatives for the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce. “The Liberty Bell came into what is now downtown Allentown and was hidden here while the British occupied Philadelphia. That’s an incredible piece of American history\, and it happened right here. We wanted to create a celebration that brings that story to life and gives people a reason to come downtown\, experience it together\, and see Allentown’s history in a new light.” \nThe festival will open at 11 a.m. with a flag-raising and opening ceremony at Allentown City Hall\, featuring Ciardi\, Mayor Matt Tuerk\, and the Brandywine Colonials. At 11:15 a.m.\, the Brandywine Colonials will lead a processional through downtown to Zion’s Church. At approximately 11:25 a.m.\, historian and storyteller Joshua Fink will share the story of the Liberty Bell and its journey to Allentown\, allowing attendees to experience the history at the site where it unfolded. \n“Downtown Allentown is a great place for a party and full of hidden gems\, including amazing food\, shopping\, and attractions. As we commemorated the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence\, we wanted to keep the celebration going with our unique contribution to the nation’s founding: the protector of the Liberty Bell during a time of peril. DESCRIPTION:Early American Candle Making & Educational Workshop \nat the Daniel Boone Homestead\nSunday\, September 20\, 2026 • 1-3pm \nJoin the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates for their first annual Early American Candle Making & Educational Workshop with Heritage Art and Craft Studio. Journey back in time with Greg and Peggy Geesaman to learn the art of crafting candles with natural beeswax. Participants will take part in the careful and significant process of candle dipping\, a traditional Early American method\, as they create your own double wick 100% beeswax hand-dipped candle. In addition\, participants will make a 5" cinnamon scented\ndisplay ornament\, by a method similarly used by German Lebkuchen Bakers in the sixteenth century from a Stoneware Cookie mold (designs vary). A Historic Presentation from Colonial period interpreters during class will reveal some interesting facts about Early American Living and the history of candle making in the eighteenth century.\nHeritage Art and Craft Studio is co-owned by Greg Geesaman and Peggy Allen-Geesaman. For over fifty years\, Greg has dedicated himself to the study of American History\, as well as gardening\, landscaping\, agriculture\, and environmental preservation. He shares his knowledge with others through educational seminars\, classes\, and workshops. Peggy\, a native of Berks County\, has dedicated over 30 years to teaching art and crafts. Before launching her own business in the 1990s\, she worked in retail\nmarketing. While she offers a wide range of classes\, her true passion lies in Traditional American crafts. She stays informed of current historical trends as a member of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration (HSEAD). This is a beginner-level workshop and is open to all ages if accompanied by an adult. As part of our participation in the Challenge\, the Homestead will host a history hike on September 26 beginning at 9am. This hike will take visitors through the Homestead’s historic area\, stopping to view various historic structures and landscapes\, including the Boone House and Bertolet Log House. The hike will take approximately 1 hour and will primarily be on gravel\, stone walking paths. Sturdy shoes are encouraged and dogs are welcome but must be leashed. There is no fee for this program\, but donations are always welcome. The program is rain or shine and is presented and funded by The Daniel Boone Homestead Associates.The Berks Trail Challenge continues through October 31 st . This is a great opportunity for residents of the community to engage in a free form of exercise and explore the various trails and parks throughout Berks\nCounty. If you can’t make the history hike on September 26 th \, feel free to visit the Homestead during our open hours and complete the Boone trail for the challenge. Leaving the drinking behind\, and pursuing what it meant to truly love\, he realized there was a God.  \nMatthew asked God to introduce Himself and in just a few days everything changed. \nBroken\, empty\, sorrowful Matthew asked Jesus to forgive him and today Matthew’s sins are forgiven and forgotten. \nNow\, Matthew spends his time serving at Abiding Branch Ministries telling as many people as he can about Jesus. \n Come hear Matthew’s powerful story of hurt\, forgiveness\, and radical transformation. DESCRIPTION:Heritage Day Fall Festival\nSunday\, October 18\, 2026 • 12:00-4:00pm \nThe Daniel Boone Homestead will come alive with the sights\, smells\, and sounds of colonial America during our Heritage Day Fall Festival. Celebrate the arrival of Fall with your family and friends. This event will feature a variety of colonial and early American demonstrations\, trades\, and hands-on activities. It will include some new participants and demonstrations this year while also continuing our celebration of America250. This year’s highlights include blacksmithing\, gunsmithing\, leatherworking\, open hearth cooking\,\ntinsmithing\, spinning\, gardening\, and an eighteenth-century fashion display. Visitors will hear from living history interpreters about the colonial militia and Dragoons and can participate in a muster activity using wooden dummy guns and swords. The event also includes a variety of artisan craft and specialty food vendors plus fall activities for children like pumpkin painting. Stone House History will be returning this year with their tape weaving and wood carving demonstrations and colonial musician Robert Mouland will be entertaining visitors all afternoon with his historic instruments and dancing puppets. Plus\, enjoy music from the Brandywine Fife and Drum Corps and learn about the importance of the fife and drum during the American Revolution. We are excited to also have\nCoffee with a Colonial joining us for the first time this year\, giving visitors unique insight into this important colonial beverage. In addition to demonstrations and trades\, there will be a variety of eighteenth-century hands-on activities for children and adults to enjoy including candle dipping\, quill pen writing\, and colonial toys and games. Visitors are invited to tour the two historic houses onsite – the Boone House and the Bertolet Log House – and learn about the three families who lived on the property in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Inside the Boone House\, visitors can view the Apothecary display featuring period medical instruments. Make sure to visit the spring cellar too – the oldest part of the Boone House. On your way through the Boone Yard\, make a stop at the laundress and tailor. And don’t forget a visit to the unique\, three-room Bertolet Log House\,\na prime example of early Germanic architecture. Admission: Adults $12.00\, Seniors (65+) $10.00\, Youth (6-17) $5.00.  Children 5 and under and DBHA members are free. Please\, no pets (except service animals) and no smoking. The event is presented and funded by The Daniel Boone Homestead Associates. The Daniel Boone Homestead is the birthplace of the famed frontiersman\, born in 1734. The Boone House\, constructed in three stages throughout the eighteenth century\, is a 10-room stone structure fully furnished to the period and situated on 579 acres of rolling countryside. The Daniel Boone Homestead is located halfway between Reading and Pottstown\, one mile north of Rt. 422 near Baumstown. The Homestead is owned by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission\, and\ndaily historic operations are run by the Daniel Boone Homestead Associates\, a local\, nonprofit organization.
